Protecting British Columbia’s Natural Legacy — One Step at a Time
At Conservation BC, our mission is clear: to safeguard the ecological integrity of British Columbia’s landscapes, wildlife, and natural resources for current and future generations. We believe that conservation is not just about protecting nature—it’s about sustaining life, supporting communities, and ensuring a resilient future in the face of climate change and environmental degradation.
Founded by a passionate group of environmentalists, scientists, and community advocates, Conservation BC emerged from a shared concern for the growing threats facing our province’s natural ecosystems. From the ancient rainforests of the Great Bear to the fragile alpine meadows of the Rockies, British Columbia is home to some of the most diverse and spectacular ecosystems in North America. But these natural treasures are under increasing pressure from development, pollution, habitat loss, and climate instability.
Our Vision
We envision a future where British Columbia’s natural habitats are preserved and restored, where wildlife thrives in healthy ecosystems, and where communities are empowered to act as stewards of the land. We believe that conservation should be rooted in science, guided by Indigenous knowledge, and driven by grassroots action.
Our Mission
Conservation BC is dedicated to:
- Protecting ecosystems and biodiversity through habitat preservation, restoration, and science-based advocacy.
- Collaborating with Indigenous communities, honoring traditional ecological knowledge and supporting Indigenous-led conservation initiatives.
- Promoting sustainable practices that balance environmental protection with economic and community well-being.
- Educating and inspiring the public to take action in support of conservation through outreach, campaigns, and hands-on initiatives.
- Influencing policy and legislation to ensure strong environmental protections across British Columbia.
What We Do
Our work spans across multiple areas of conservation, including:
- Land and Wildlife Protection: We work to secure permanent protection for critical habitats and endangered species. This includes supporting land trusts, advocating for protected area designations, and restoring degraded ecosystems.
- Indigenous Partnerships: Conservation BC is committed to working in true partnership with Indigenous Nations across the province. We support land back initiatives, Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs), and the revitalization of traditional stewardship practices.
- Climate Action: Healthy ecosystems are vital for climate resilience. We engage in reforestation, wetland restoration, and the protection of carbon-rich landscapes like old-growth forests and peatlands to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
- Public Engagement and Education: From school programs and community events to digital resources and citizen science, we strive to make conservation accessible and actionable for everyone.
- Advocacy and Policy: We engage with policymakers, scientists, and community leaders to promote legislation that protects BC’s environment, holds polluters accountable, and ensures that development decisions consider long-term ecological impacts.
Our Approach
What sets Conservation BC apart is our holistic, community-centered approach. We recognize that conservation is most successful when it involves those who are most connected to the land. Whether it’s supporting a small coastal village fighting to protect its marine ecosystems, or working with youth to build the next generation of environmental leaders, we believe that real change happens at the grassroots level.
We also understand the importance of science and data in informing our work. Our initiatives are grounded in ecological research and supported by collaborations with academic institutions, field researchers, and local experts.
At the same time, we are a loud and persistent voice for nature in the political arena. We advocate fiercely for stronger protections, greater transparency, and bold action to confront the twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change.
